The GFCI serves an important purpose in any electrical circuit. It provides protection against current leakage to ground, which can cause an electrical shock or in extreme cases, death. For this reason GFCIs must always be properly installed and never be removed our altered.
The two classifications of GFCI devices used in spas are:
* A Class A GFCI, which is attached to the spa's power cord, protects 115 Vac spas. This type of GFCI provides protection against current leakage to ground. * 230 Vac spas are protected by a GFCI breaker, which is contained in a sub-panel installed between the main electrical panel and the spa. This type of GFCI provides protection against current leakage to ground as well as protecting the circuit against excessive current draw. GFCI Operation
The GFCI measures the amount of current drawn by the spa, in comparison to the amount of current supplied from the line. The difference between the two values of current is called the differential of current. When the differential of current is greater than the trip value of the GFCI (5 mA, plus or minus 1 mA), the GFCI will trip. A tripped GFCI isolates the spa from the line voltage, essentially blocking all power to the spa.
Monthly testing of the GFCI is required.
